Amalfi Coast Travel Guide: Flying from North America to Italy's Coastal Paradise
Updated Jun 10, 2025
Fly to Naples, then take a car, ferry, or bus to reach the Amalfi Coast. The journey requires some planning but rewards with stunning views.

Overview
Ease of getting there
Reaching the Amalfi Coast from North America requires a bit of planning. Most travelers fly into Naples International Airport, the closest major hub. From there, it's a scenic journey to the coast. Major U.S. and Canadian cities offer flights to Naples with one or more stops in European cities like Rome, Paris, or Frankfurt. Once in Naples, you can reach the Amalfi Coast by private transfer, ferry, or bus. The journey from Naples to Amalfi takes about 1.5 hours by car or 2 hours by ferry. For a more budget-friendly option, take the train from Naples to Salerno, then a bus or ferry to your final destination. While the travel time is longer, the coastal views make it worthwhile. Remember, the Amalfi Coast is busiest from June to August, so book well in advance for summer trips.
Customs and immigration
Italy uses e-gates for faster passport control. U.S. and Canadian citizens typically clear customs in 30-60 minutes. Have your passport and accommodation details ready. Remember, you're entering the Schengen Area, so standard EU entry rules apply.
Flights from the US / Canada
Major U.S. and Canadian cities offer flights to Naples with stops in European hubs. Airlines like Delta, United, Air Canada, and Lufthansa operate these routes. Flights typically run daily during peak season, less frequently in winter.
From airport to city center
From Naples Airport, take a private transfer or taxi for the most direct route to Amalfi (about 1.5 hours). For a scenic option, catch a ferry from Naples port to Amalfi or nearby towns. Budget travelers can take a bus from the airport to Sorrento, then another to Amalfi.

Time is precious. Get the most out of every moment traveling.
